Software

The HTC One V runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich overlaid with HTC Sense 4.0, however, Google rolls out updates pretty regularly, so there could be some new software on its way. Read on to find out how to check if new software is available and how to update your phone. The One X also has Beats Audio technology integrated into it, designed to be used with the Beats Audio headphones (although it does work with ‘normal’ headphones too). This doesn’t require any sort of update.

How will I know if a software update has been released?

The quickest way to check if an update has been released for your phone is to go to Settings from the main menu, select About then Software Updates. Make sure the Scheduled check box is ticked and you will be alerted when an update is available. You can also keep an eye on the P4u News and Community for regular news about this sort of thing.

Connectivity

How do I change my phone’s Bluetooth name?

Go to Settings from the Applications menu.
Tap Bluetooth.
Toggle the Bluetooth button On.
Tap Menu in the top right hand corner.
A pop-up box will now appear, select Rename Phone.
Just type in the new name and press Rename when you’re done.

How do I pair my phone with another Bluetooth device?

Go to Settings from the Applications menu.
Choose Bluetooth.
Toggle the Bluetooth button On.
Your phone will now scan for devices.
To scan again select Menu then Scan For Devices.
Press the name of the device you want to pair with.
You will now get a Bluetooth Pairing Request. Check that the passkey is the same one displayed on the other device and press Pair.

How do I turn off Bluetooth?

Go to Settings.
Toggle the Bluetooth button Off.

How do I remove a device from my Bluetooth pairing list?

Go to Settings from the Applications menu.
Choose Bluetooth.
Press the Menu button to the right of the paired device’s name.
Tap Unpair.

How do I stop people sending me stuff over Bluetooth?

Go to Settings.
Tap Bluetooth
Toggle Phone Visible to Other Devices Off.

How do I connect my phone to my computer?

Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
Swipe down the notifications bar from the top of the screen.
Under the Ongoing header withing the Notifications click the Charge Only bar.
You will then be asked what connection type you would like to use. Choose Disk Drive and tap Done.
Your phone will now appear as an external hard drive in the My Computer, so you can drag and drop files onto your phone.

Camera

How do I take a picture on my phone?

Go to Camera from the Applications menu, or choose the Camera icon in the navigation bar at the bottom of the home screen. You will now be able to see what the camera lens is seeing.
Press the aperture button to take a snap.

How do I capture a video on my phone?

Go to Camera from the Applications menu or home navigation bar.
Tap the Video Camera icon to start/end recording.

How do I record a video in 720p?

In Camera mode press the Settings icon (which looks like a cog).
Tap Video Quality.
Select HD (1280 x 720).

How do I use Dual Capture mode?

Select Camera from the main menu.
Tap Video icon to begin recording.
Tap the Shutter button the capture images whilst recording.

Where can I view the pictures/videos I’ve taken?

If you’re in Camera mode:

At the bottom left corner of your screen you’ll see a small icon of the last picture or video you took. Tap this to go straight to the gallery.

From the Applications Menu:

Go to Gallery.
Select Camera Shots.

How do I edit a photo?

Open up the album where the photo you want to edit is.
Press and hold the thumbnail of the image you want to edit.
On the pop-up menu, tap Edit.
You can now choose to Rotate, Crop or Add Effects. Whenever you edit a photo, your phone will still keep the original copy.

How do I edit a video?

Choose the album in which the video you want to edit is stored.
Press and hold the thumbnail icon of the video.
Tap Trim (scissors icon).
Drag the two sliders to the part of the video you want to trim.
Tap Play to preview your clip.
Press Done when you’re finished.

How do I delete a picture or video?

Go to Gallery from the Applications menu.
Choose Camera Shots.
Tap the Delete icon from the bottom toolbar.
Select the pictures or videos you want to delete by marking them with a red X. If you choose the wrong one, simply tap on it again and then select the correct one.
Tap Delete.

How many pictures can I take on my phone?

It all depends on how much memory you have left. The HTC One V comes with 4GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to 32GB with a microSD card. As a rough guide, around 4GB of memory will hold about 1,600 pictures, so 32GB can hold a lot more.

What’s the longest video clip I can record on my phone?

Unlimited. It just depends on how much memory you have left.

Messaging

How do I set up an email account on my phone?

Go to Mail from the Applications menu or the navigation bar.
Select your Email Provider.
Enter the email address and password for your account and tap Next.
Choose how often your phone checks the account for new mails, and what data you wish to syncronise, tap Next.
Type in your account name and your name and then tap Finish Set-up.
If you want to sync your work email account to your phone, your IT guy at work will be able to give you the information you need to get going.

How do I send an email?

Go to your email inbox and tap the Compose key (it looks like a plus sign)
Enter your recipient’s email address, a subject and type your message.
Tap Send when you’re ready.

How do I send an attachment in an email?

Go to your email inbox and press the Compose key.
Enter your recipient’s email address, a subject and type your message.
Tap Attach.
Choose the type of file you want to attach. This will take you to your folder that holds that type of file, for example choosing Picture will give you the option to choose a file from your Gallery or take a new image with your Camera.
Remove an attachment by long pressing on the attachment’s file name and choose Remove.
Tap Send.

How do I edit the signature on my email account?

Go to Mail from the Applications menu.
Tap the Menu button.
Click Settings.
Press General Settings.
Choose Signature.
Type in your new signature and press Save.

How do I send a picture or video message?

Go to Messages.
Select Compose.
Enter the name or number of the person you’re sending the attachment to and then tap the Paperclip (Attach) icon.
Choose which kind of file you want to send.
Tap on the picture or video you want to send to attach it to the message. Click Remove if you chose the wrong one.
Press Send when you’re ready to send the message.

How do I delete a text message?

Go to your text message inbox and press Menu.
Tap Delete.
Tick the boxes of the messages you want to delete.
Press Delete.

Media

How do I put music onto my phone?

Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
Pull down the Notifications bar on the homescreen.
Choose Disk Drive to mount the phone as disk drive.
Tap Done.
Your phone will now appear as an external hard drive in My Computer.
Drag your music files from your computer into this folder.
When you’re finished, go back into the Ongoing header within the Notifications bar and select Charge Only.
Safely remove your phone from your computer when you’re finished.

How do I set my favourite song as a ringtone?

From the Applications screen, tap Music, then My phone.
Find the song that you want to set as a ringtone.
Tap Set as Ringtone.
Tap Phone Ringtone or Contact Ringtone. If you select Contact Ringtone, choose the contacts you want to associate the ringtone with.

How do I trim an MP3 ringtone?

Find the song that you want, tap Set as Ringtone, then trim the ringtone.
Drag the trim sliders to the parts where you want the ringtone to begin and end. To be more precise in your trimming, tap the left or right arrow buttons. Time markers indicate the position you are at in the song.
When you’re done trimming, tap Set As.
Choose whether to set your trimmed song as your Phone Ringtone or Contact Ringtone.

How do I make a music playlist?

From the Applications screen, tap Music.
The tap My phone.
Tap the Menu (three dots next to the song name), choose Add To Playlist.
If there are no existing playlists, you will be prompted to enter a New Playlist name.

How do I add songs to a playlist?

Go to the playlist you want to add songs to.
Tap Menu and select Add Songs.
Choose the songs you want to add by ticking the boxes and tapping Add.

How do I delete a song?

Go to the playlist where the song you want to delete is.
Tap Remove Songs and tick the boxes of the songs you want to delete.
Tap Remove.

How do I delete a playlist?

Press and hold over the name of the playlist you want to delete.
Tap Delete Playlist.

What type of media files does my phone support?

The HTC One V supports:

aac, .amr, .ogg, .m4a, .mid, .mp3, .wav, .wma and .amr music files.

3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3) and .mp4 video files.

How many songs can my phone hold?

Your phone supports up to 32GB with a suitable microSD card, and if you consider that 8GB of memory can hold about 2,000 songs, you’ll be able to fit plenty onto the HTC One V.

What is Beats Audio?

Beats Audio is special audio enhancing technology included in your phone. It works by loading a specially optimised ‘Beats Audio’ profile when you plug in Beats in-ear headphones and this automatically sorts out all the levels (like you would do yourself via the equaliser settings screen) resulting in studio-quality sound. The new Beats Audio technology is designed to revolutionise the audio performance we expect from mobile devices, and you really can tell the difference in quality when the Beats tech is in action. On the HTC One V, Beats Audio works across all audio outputs, so whether you’re listening to music from your library, streaming video from YouTube or indulging in a spot of Spotify, you’ll still benefit from the beefed-up sound performance. The tech does work best with Beats headphones, but it’ll still improves output regardless of the cans you’ve got plugged in.

How do I use Beats Audio?

Beats Audio will automatically activate when you plug in your headphones (you should see a circular Beats logo appear in the notifications area at the top of the screen when it’s in action).

To switch Beats on and off whilst in media player:

Activate Beats Audio by plugging in any Beats headphones. The Beats profile is now automatically activated.
To toggle between Beats Audio and normal playback swipe down notification bar from the top of the screen.
Press Off to turn Beats off, the Beats logo will change colour from red to grey.
To turn it back on press Enable

Apps

Does my phone have an app store?

Yes indeed. It comes with access to Google Play.

How do I download an app?

Open up the Google Play by tapping the Play Shop icon in the Applications menu.
Sign-in to your Google account (or follow the steps to create one if you’re new to this).
Browse through all of the available apps.
Tap the name of the app you want to download to find out more details (such as how much it costs and what it does).
If an app is free, just press the Install button, then hit Accept & Download to start the download.
If you have to pay for an app, follow the on-screen instructions to make a payment.
Once downloaded, the app will appear in your Applications menu.

How do I delete an app?

From the Home screen, tap Play Store.
Tap My apps.
Tap the app you want to uninstall, and then tap Uninstall.

How do I close an app?

Press the Open Apps button (it’s the right hand touchscreen key on the bottom of the screen).
You will see a carousel of open applications.
Swipe the app up off the edge of the screen to close it.

Internet

How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network on my phone?

Go to Settings.
Click Wi-Fi.
Make sure your Wi-Fi receiver is turned on by ticking the box next to Wi-Fi.
Tap Menu, then Scan. Your phone will now scan for wireless networks.
Tap on the name of the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.
Enter a password if asked.
Tap Connect.

How do I sign into my social networks?

Your phone comes with pre-loaded Facebook and Twitter for Android apps. Just follow the on-screen instructions to sign-in to your account.

How do I use Friendstream?

Friendstream is a nifty feature that displays all your social networking updates in one feed. It’s also really easy to set up. All you need to do is go to Friendstream from the main menu and sign into your accounts. You can update your status on all your social networking sites in one go using Friendstream. To do this:

On the All Updates tab, tap What’s On Your Mind?
Write your status update.
Select which social networks you want to post to.
Choose if you want to add a picture or check-in to the place you’re at.
Tap Post.

How do I use my phone as a Wi-Fi hot spot (tethering)?

First, you need to install HTC Sync on your computer. You can get this from the official HTC website.
Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
On the drop down notification bar select Charge Only.
Then select USB Tethering.
Tap Done.
