P4u Round Up: Our Pick Of The Week
Blimey Charlie, is it Friday already? Well yes, yes it is. And that can only mean one thing – it’s time for our tea-timely round up of all the mobileullar tech happenings from the past seven days. Now keen visitors to our site might have noticed that Pick of The Week didn’t appear last Friday afternoon and for this we can only apologise. This was due to some IT-based shenanigans beyond our control (the tech bods here at P4u Towers said it was something to do with nasty software attacking our home on the web, but we reckon a particularly bored techy absent mindedly chewed through a cable). Anyway, enough of our chuntering, here’s some lovely news parcels for you to get stuck into…
iPad, the time of my life…and I’ve never felt this way before
Just when we thought we were done with i-speculation for the time being (well, until CES and Mobile World Congress rock up anyway), some uber-geeks have revved up the rumour mill by finding references to two new iPads deep within the code for Apple’s recently released iOS 5.1 update. What they were doing firking around in there when they could have been out with girls is anybody’s guess, but thanks to those intrepid nerds, we’ve got another round of Apple conjecture to feast on in the run up to Christmas.
Make Xoom for one more
We heard rumblings a while back that those Moto chaps would be following up their rather lovely Xoom tablet with not one, but two successors in the form of the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition. What we didn’t have a Scooby about though was just how soon they’d drop, but thanks to seemingly-in-the-news-every-chuffin-day retailer Clove, we now know – next week. The eagerly anticipated fondle-slabs look pretty decent and come jammed with some top tech including 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Media Edition has a slightly smaller 8.2-inch screen compared to the 10.2-inch belter sported by the common or garden version.
Chips with everything
You know what this mobile lark is like dontcha? Something leaks (or is officially announced) and the internet goes into overdrive with speculationists, rumour-mongers and tech obsessed bedroom-dwellers putting two and two together and coming up with a a device more technologically advanced than the Deathstar, David Hasslehoff’s talking car and that spaceship from Flight of The Navigator combined. That’s exactly what’s happened here - Samsung announce a new chip capable of 3D (amongst other things), and that definitely means that they’re about to release a 3D tablet. Of course it does. Of course it does.
Out on the Flash
The rather spangly Samsung Galaxy Nexus burst onto the scene a couple of weeks ago and very impressive it was indeed. However, some weren’t so easily won over, not least the swathes of techno-curmudgeons moaning about the lack of Flash support. However, that moaning looks set to subside as makers of the interweb animation thingy Adobe have come out and said that they’ll be updating Ice Cream Sandwich with some new Flash business before the year is out. Well played Adobe – swift decisive action is always welcomed.
Let’s take this inside
Google Maps is pretty useful isn’t it? Not like the old days when you’d had to go traipsing about wrestling with massive bit of sodden paper in a storm to find out where you needed to be going (or having to locate an 18th century seafarerer and ask him to tell you where you are by looking at the position of the stars). Now though, all that tech-fuelled navigating has got even better thanks to the new Google Maps 6.0 update for Android which lets users have a nosey around the inside of buildings. Ok, it isn’t like street view, is limited to a few specific buildings and only shows mappage not images, but knowing Google, that’s probably not far off.
Right, that’s us done for another week. We’re all off to spend the weekend sighing wearily at the increasing cost of Christmas and wondering just who we can get away with not buying presents for. See you here next week (technological glitches permitting of course).
