LG Nexus 5 In The Works?
Mixed messages regarding a new branded handset
Confusion reigns regarding the future of the rumoured LG Nexus 5, after comments made by a senior company figure have since been contradicted in another statement
Speaking to Dutch website All About Phones, Kim Won, vice president of LG Mobile Europe, initially claimed there are no plans to release a follow up to the popular Nexus 4 despite it being a marketing success. He also confirmed there would be no ‘Nexus edition’ of any forthcoming handset.
Yet according to The Verge, a senior LG official has since claimed Won’s comments have been misinterpreted and that, whilst it’s not currently working on a Nexus handset, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. Confused? Us too.
‘No added value’
It does make a little sense, though, with the news coming as a surprise to those who had all but confirmed LG as the provider of the next Nexus. Although the confusion as to its future hasn’t been resolved, the new comments explain why we didn’t see a new handset appear at Google I/O earlier this month.
Instead the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus edition turned up and delighted fans, although the concept of a flagship handset getting the ‘Google treatment’ is something Won believes ‘has no added value’ without a manufacturer’s own overlays.
Elsewhere the vice president also confirmed the company will be releasing a new Android tablet soon, bringing to an end a quiet period. Little is known about the device but Won confirmed the market remains ‘a target’ despite the lack of recent activity.
So, to Nexus or not to Nexus, that is the question. After the success of the previous handset and its subsequent colour shift into white, there will be many hoping LG makes up its mind and gets one sorted. But we’ll have to wait and see for now.
