BlackBerry’s have undoubtedly become one of the hottest devices on the phone market and as so many of us are already aware, these big boys can come with a rather large price tag. Of course, you get a top-notch technology package for your money, but what if you don’t want to pay for the fancy extras and just want a no mess, no fuss good quality phone? Well, RIM have created a device for those who long for just that, rather than a mini-computer that just happens to make calls as well. It’s easy on the wallet, easy to use and looks just as good as any of those superphones we keep hearing about! It’s time to open up the BlackBerry Curve 8520!

The 8520 oozes classic BlackBerry from the offset. It’s glossy, smart and its compact size will fit into the smallest of pockets. Shortcut keys appear in abundance, all neatly concealed around those sleek curved edges, which just so happen to encase that trademark BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard. The Curve also features RIM’s touch-sensitive optical trackpad that offers super-responsive navigation, which can be supped up to provide speedy navigation or knocked down a notch for a bit of snail pace action.

RIM has thrown all their easy to use features to ensure the Curve is as user-friendly as possible, and generally speaking they’ve hit the nail on the head. The Curve 8520 operates on BlackBerry’s OS 4.6, which for what it’s worth we find rather charming. Combined with the device’s 512MHz CPU processor, it functions really well and while the text sub-menus resemble a late 60’s throwback, it does make it easy to find things. The Curve 8520 is the perfect partner for those budding socialites. There’s no end of spangly shortcuts, allowing you to find contacts straight from your homescreen, speed dial at the touch of a button and sort out your emails from the front page. The QWERTY keyboard is great for typing quick messages and even has separate buttons for every key, making it perfectly optimised for those chubby fingered among us. Throwing caution to the wind, the optical trackpad is open for business whenever, however and by whoever. Simply swipe podgy, skinny, long, short, sticky, and clammy fingers across the surface and you’ll be switching through menus at the rate of knots.

The only place where we can see the Curve is lacking is in the connectivity department, which depending on how you plan to abuse this package may not be a huge problem. While you don’t get features such as 3G, it works its backside off to ensure it keeps up as best as it can. On another note these lower-specs are definitely practical; they’ll do wonders for your battery life!

The BlackBerry Curve 8520 has been designed with more than just business in mind. For starters, it has dedicated music keys on the top of the device to flick between tracks avoiding the hassle of going back to your playlist every time. You can enjoy DivX and XviD support too, so you won’t need to convert videos before installing them. For the snap happy, the Curve 8520 has a 2 megapixel camera onboard with video capture too. There’s also a microSD slot crammed in which can handle cards up to 32GB.

Talking technology and you’ll have a phone to rely on wherever you go with Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, microUSB port and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Curve 8520 has usability written all over it, proving that sometimes it’s important to remember your roots. Whether you’re after a bit on the side for business or pleasure, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 will definitely come to the rescue for all your mobile needs.

    • Harriet Rhodes

      Hey Sarah,

I think network choice is down to personal preference. If i were you I would check out who’s offering the most minutes, texts and best data plan.

BlackBerry OS is the company’s very own Operating System, essentially it’s what powers it. The Operating System determines how the menus look, how it all works together and what apps you can download.

Some apps come with the phone- simple ones like an organiser etc, there are loads more available from the BlackBerry app store too.

      Hope this helps,
      Harriet

  • tammy

i just got a bb curve 8520 on pay as you go but i cet my sim and number and i was just wondering if i have to set up bbm or is it allready set up and just have to add pins

  • Harriet Rhodes

    Hey,

So, BlackBerry Messenger works through the BlackBerry internet. When you buy a contract phone – the data plan that comes with it should include this, therefore access to BlackBerry Mail and Messenger is included in your bundle.

If you only have a “normal” internet plan, ie if you’ve put an existing SIM into a BlackBerry device or are on Pay as you go, you will not have access to BBM.

There are ways around this, you can buy BlackBerry Bolt Ons which provide access to the BB servers, and will therefore give you access to the additional services.

You’ll need to check these details out with your network or the reseller to see if they offer them.

    Hope this helps!
    Harriet

  • Jess

is the BBM FREEE on pay as you go? on the advert it says its free.

  • Amy

Will i be able to bring this phone to use in oversea using oversea network? Would it support GSM 900 network?

  • sally

does the bbm stay on your phone forever if your on pay as you go

    • http://community.phones4u.co.uk/?intcid=Headers_NewsandCommunity Dean Quinn

      Hi Sally,

BlackBerry Messenger on pay as you go will depend on the data plan you have with your network. BBM comes with all BlackBerrys but it won’t be free to use on pay as you go unless you buy a Blackberry Bolt On from your network service provider. The cost and availability of these depend on your network.

      Hope this helps.

      Dean

  • Abbey

im buying a blackberry what i wanted to know is how much per month is the BBM? aslo i heard you can get it free. can you get it free by pay as you go?.

    • http://community.phones4u.co.uk/?intcid=Headers_NewsandCommunity Dean Quinn

      Hi there Abbey,

BlackBerry Messenger services are included with all BlackBerry handsets and access to BlackBerry Mail and Messenger will be included in the data plan that comes with it when you buy a BlackBerry on a contract.

If you’re planning to get a BlackBerry on pay as you go, or stick an exsisting SIM into your new BB, access to BlackBerry Messenger will depend on your data plan. If you only have a bog-standard internet plan, then you will not have access to BBM.

However, you can get access to it if your’e on pay as you go by buying a BlackBerry Bolt On which will provide access to the BB servers and give you access to the additional services. Have a word with your network or the place you buy the handset from and they will tell you if they’re offered or where you can get them from.

Hope this has been of some use.

      Dean

      • Abbey

so ive got to ask t-mobile for a blackberry bolt on?

  • Abbey

oh sorry aslo it has on the advert you can get the pink curve with free bbm on pay as you go. how do you do this? aslo ive orderd a pink one on sunday the 2nd of january when do you think it will be here by?

  • Luke Heaven

Nice phone to use, but nothing like or as good as the 9700 bold …. the qwerty key pad lacks feel, no wifi !?? and the camera is very basic but average, one thing that i really dislike is the apps that blackberry have to offer, the free apps are totally useless, and the ones that are any good cost a small fortune !! ……. if you are deciding to go blackberry, go for the bold 9700, storm 2 or the fantastic 9800 torch as you will find that the camera is second to none even tho its only a 3.2 mp and video recording is out of this world when watched back through a pc

  • abbey

i am thinking of getting a blackberry curve 8520 in white. On the advert it says that withh the pink blackberry curve it comess with free BBM , but does the white one aswell or is it just exclusively for pink ones ??

    thankss.

    • http://community.phones4u.co.uk/?intcid=Headers_NewsandCommunity Dean Quinn

      Hi Abbey,

BBM comes on all BlackBerrys but the cost of using it depends on your data plan. If you look further down these comments, we’ve explained what the deal is regarding BBM to some other readers. Have a look and if that doesn’t answer your question, feel free to hit us up again.

      Thanks,

blackberry curve is rubbish i have 2, one on orange and one on vodafone. the network is not the problem. i have had nothing but trouble with both from freezing, sending multiple txts, speaker wasnt working and also on one of them when i was on the fone it kept cutting out n i couldnt hear what the person was saying because it was switching to headset even though i didnt have headset plugged in???

good apps n bbm though and the networks were pretty fast at replacing my broken phones with new 1s, next day delivery although same freezing problems still occuring.

i like blackberry next time i will get a torch n see if that is improved from the curve.

    peace out :)

  • Clare

I was just wondering, if I was to get a blackberry 8520 could I put my existing contract sim card in the phone and add blackberry messenger? Also, I have internet on my existing contract so could I still use the internet?

  • Gemma Gemma

i am gettin a blackberry Curve 8520 pink orange pay as you go but i am just wondering how much are the bolt on because i really want to get the internet so i can go on facebook, twitter and that

plzz can u help me ?

    • http://community.phones4u.co.uk/?intcid=Headers_NewsandCommunity Dean Quinn

      Hi Gemma,

You’ll have to speak with your network for prices for bolt-ons etc as well as what kind of data plan you’ll get.

If you ask in store, the guys should be able to give you a bit more information, although I’d advise giving Orange a call as they’ll be selling it to you and will know the definite answers.

      Hope this helps,

      Dean

Hi, i am thinking about getting it, but am not sure which one … i am a 12 year old who is a facebook addict and loooves to txt! soo which one … i have a 200 pound budget tho? xx comment back plz

    • Harriet Rhodes

      Hey Callum,

If you’ve got a £200 budget I guess you’re talking about Pay as You Go.

If it’s a BlackBerry that you want I’d advise that you get the Curve 9300, which is an upgraded version of the 8520. It has all the same features and functionality but with the added benefit of 3G connectivity.
If you’d like a little more info on it then you can check out our full review here: http://community.phones4u.co.uk/blackberry-curve-3g-qwerty-power/

I am just about to buy my daughter,11, this phone is it the right one? before she goes to secondary

    • AbbiCox

      Hi Tracey,

BlackBerrys make great phones for younger customers! If you take a look at our reviews section and compare the features of different handsets you’ll be able to decide on the one which is best for your daughter.

      Abbi.

  • DanGrose

    Hi Evebangwan,

This sounds like an issue with the software. The best way to solve these problems is to upgrade your software if an update is available.

To upgrade your software, simply connect your BlackBerry to your computer via USB and use BlackBerry Desktop Software. If you haven’t got this installed, load the CD that came with your device or download the latest version from BlackBerry’s website.

Once your phone is connected it will automatically scan for updates and then guide you through the process of installing it should one be available. This sorts out the majority of issues such as these.

    Hope this helps,

    Dan.
